Learning comes to life as our Year 1 children explore the wonders of Autumn.

Our Year 1 children have been enjoying a wonderful Autumn walk, taking their learning beyond the classroom and discovering the seasonal changes happening all around them.
Wrapped up and ready to explore, the children became nature detectives, using their eyes, ears and curiosity to investigate the world around them.
They looked carefully at the trees, plants and leaves, spotting beautiful Autumn colours and noticing how the environment is changing as the weather becomes colder. There were plenty of opportunities to collect observations, compare what they could see and talk about the signs of Autumn.
This exciting experience links directly to our bespoke Abingdon Year 1 Curriculum Progression documents, helping children develop the knowledge and skills set out in their learning journey.

Through real-life experiences, the children were able to:
- Observe and describe changes in the seasons.
- Identify and compare different types of leaves and natural materials.
- Develop their scientific observation and questioning skills.
- Use new vocabulary to describe what they could see and discover.
- Talk about the world around them and share their ideas.
Learning outdoors also provides a wonderful opportunity to bring our ARCH values to life:
- Ambition: Being curious, asking questions and wanting to discover more.
- Respect: Caring for nature and looking after our local environment.
- Collaboration: Working together, sharing discoveries and helping each other.
- Honesty: Talking about what we have observed and sharing our ideas.
Our walk also supports our wider British Values, particularly mutual respect and individual liberty, as children learn to value shared spaces, appreciate their local community and understand their responsibility to care for the environment.
At Abingdon, we believe that children learn best when they can experience things for themselves. Opportunities like this make our curriculum meaningful, memorable and exciting, helping children build knowledge that they can take back into the classroom and beyond.
A huge well done to our Year 1 explorers for their enthusiasm, brilliant observations and wonderful curiosity.

Crunching leaves, bright colours and curious minds – what a fantastic way to learn about Autumn.
