At Abingdon Primary School, we believe that music is a vital part of every child’s education and plays a significant role in our wider school improvement journey. Music brings our school community together, enriches children’s experiences and provides opportunities for every child to develop confidence, creativity, resilience and self-expression.
We recognise that music has a powerful impact on children’s personal, social and emotional development. Through singing, performing, listening, composing and playing instruments, pupils develop essential skills such as teamwork, communication, concentration and self-discipline. Music also supports wellbeing, raises aspirations and helps children to develop a strong sense of belonging within our school community.
As part of our commitment to providing a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum, we ensure that all pupils have access to high-quality musical experiences regardless of their background or ability. Alongside specialist music lessons delivered through our partnership with SING Education, every pupil participates in a weekly one-hour singing assembly led by a specialist singing teacher. These sessions develop vocal confidence, pitch awareness, rhythm, listening skills, musical memory and performance skills, while ensuring all children have regular access to high-quality vocal tuition. This provision has become a key strength of our music offer, helping to create a strong culture of singing and musical engagement across the school.
Music contributes directly to our school improvement priorities by promoting engagement, improving attendance, developing confidence in performance, strengthening communication skills and fostering a culture where every child has the opportunity to succeed. Through regular opportunities to sing, perform and work collaboratively, pupils develop the confidence and resilience needed to thrive both within and beyond the classroom.
Through our partnerships with SING Education, Tees Valley Music and our wider community links, we are committed to building a strong musical culture across the school. We aim to inspire a lifelong love of music while ensuring that every child develops the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate fully in musical activities both within and beyond the classroom.
This Music Development Plan outlines how we will continue to strengthen our music provision, celebrate achievement and ensure that music remains at the heart of our vision for excellence at Abingdon Primary School.
