Eco Schools

At Abingdon, Eco Council are a group of children from Year 1 to Year 6 who meet weekly to discuss ways in which we can improve the environment. The Eco Council children put their heart and soul into all of the activities and projects they do and all feel very passionate about helping the environment and local community.

There are 10 main topics that Eco Council cover including biodiversity, Energy, Global citizenship, Healthy Living, Litter, Marine Life, School Grounds, Transport, Waste and Water. As well as these, Eco Council also work with charities across the world raising money for those in need.

 Green Flag Award

The Eco-Schools Green Flag is an internationally recognised award for excellence in environmental action and learning. In 2018, we managed to achieve our Green Flag award of which we are extremely proud.

Recent Projects

Trees, glorious trees!

Last year, we were working with The Green Trees Award and the Woodlands Trust to try and secure our Silver award. To do this, Eco Council spent all of Autumn term learning about trees and their importance. They informed the whole school, in two assemblies, about the importance of trees through a story called, The Man Who Planted Trees. They also created a lovely display to go in school about trees and what happens to them in each season. We visited Albert Park and collected leaves to make some beautiful art work.

Tree Delivery!

In Spring last year, we had a very exciting delivery of trees from The Woodlands Trust which we planted around school. We can’t wait to watch them grow.

Australian Bush Fire

During the tragedy of the Australian bush fires last year, Eco Council decided that they desperately wanted to help. The children wanted to raise money and adopt three Koalas. Over a week, they held a cake sale at break time and children from across school bought delicious goodies in support of the cause. At the end of the week we managed to raise £150.00 and adopt all three of our koalas.
